This can be a hot topic among dog owners, and the answer will vary widely. I know many people who bathe or take their dogs to the groomer weekly. Some people believe that their dogs need a bath in order to not smell. But guess what, your dog does not sweat! So a healthy dog should not have B.O.
My dogs have short hair and do not shed an awful lot. Unless they are actually muddy, or have rolled in something nasty, they do not get bathed. And I mean, they almost never get in the tub! I use a stripping knife to deshed them, and this tool does a great job of getting rid of dead hair and undercoat, as well as any dirt or debris found in their fur. On the rare occasion that your dog has fleas, you will be able to use this tool to find flea dirt. Another time that you will want to groom them with a stripping knife is after walking in the woods. A short grooming session will help you to find any ticks before they attach to your dog.
Here is a brief explanation of how I choose to groom my dogs:
For dogs with longer and thicker coats than a boxador or pit-mix like mine, you may need some additional tools. But my mantra is to always keep it simple!
